Deidre (Dee) Edward

I have been a potter for forty two years, I started on this journey in my early twenties. I fell in love with clay, the instant I touched it. I dreamt of being a potter for life, I always say to everyone if I am a potter until my journey here comes to an end, I will have lived my dream. I truly don’t feel that I work.

I play with clay, my passion, and my love of teaching others. My journey over the last twenty years has taken many twists and turns, personal and family adversity has meant putting my business on hold for many years. However, six years ago I started one class a week, with the aim of once again reigniting my passion for teaching clay.

When I work with clay, I am at one with the clay, it demands that you pay attention and be focused. The mesmerising nature of working on a potter’s wheel is like magic, it draws you in and to immerse oneself into the throwing of clay is like meditation and almost beyond words.

My career as a potter has kept me grounded, balanced and helped me to be centered and calm when life’s tough moments arose. It is a truly meditative experience working with clay. I have come to understand the profound therapeutic and healing effects that come from working with clay, and what a gift this experience is. If you come along to my classes I hope some of the magic of working with clay will stay with you. I always say it’s not so much about what you make, and more about the experience and learning journey about ourselves, that working with clay facilitates.
