Thank you for taking the time to read a little bit about my pottery journey! I began as one of Deidre’s students in 1999, twenty-five years ago. I spent a lot of time living in remote communities and when I moved back to Darwin, I saw an ad in the paper for pottery classes. It was always something I had been interested in, so I joined. When I first started, I thought that I would do a six-week course and that would be that, but no, I fell in love with clay from the first pinch pot I made!

I attended Deidre’s classes for seven years learning so many skills from her and making friendships along the way. When Deidre’s circumstances changed, I didn’t touch my own wheel for many years, but I knew one day I would use it again, so I held onto it.

One day I saw on social media that Aussie Potz was back in action, and I contacted Deidre. It was like nothing had changed and I jumped at the chance to reconnect with my once passion again. I joined a class and Deidre’s enthusiasm and love of sharing her craft rekindled my own energy. I grew into the role of tutor as Deidre recognised that I loved helping others in the studio and the rest, as they say, is history. I’ve been a tutor with Deidre for six years now and I am in my element! I love teaching and I love the fact that I’m still learning from the master! I also love that my daughter Melissa has joined the classes and that we get to spend some special mother and daughter time together playing with clay. Pottery does that, it brings people together and I see returning students helping out the beginners and it’s amazing. I see how people come into the studio and almost immediately, they take a deep breath and just breathe. That’s the effect clay has.

One day I’d love to think I’ll be a master, I’ve been so blessed to have Deidre’s support, guidance, and friendship but for now, I’m so happy to be a part of a wonderful team and helping others grow in their own pottery journey xxx
